I get bored of music really fast so its usually a movie or a tv show.
I know a lot of people who are gonna hate me for saying this but I find no benefit in being dishonest.
I have a lot of problems with SVA and if I could go back and choose again I probably would have gone somewhere else. The little you learn just isn’t worth the money you’re giving. The teachers WANT to teach but because most of their students are so unmotivated and lazy they have to constantly dumb down their courses and lower their standards to keep from failing half their class. In my experience it just wasn’t a very motivating community. We were even being discouraged from making group films when the beauty of animation comes from COLLABORATION. I felt very much on my own for four years and if it weren’t for my film partner Iker, a few close friends, and one inspiring mentor I would have transferred out much sooner. Most of what I learned about animation and film making came from friends and professionals I knew online.
I mean, everybody will have problems with the schools they’re attending. But usually the energy from your peers will make up for whatever problems you have. Not so much here. Not to mention there are very few ‘industry’ connections to make in NYC and most studios out there regularly underpay their employees.
So if you’re SERIOUS about going into animation and you know that’s what you want to pursue look into these schools: Ringling (for 3D), CalArts, Sheridan, SCAD (there are more, those are just off the top of my head).
If you’re afraid of challenging yourself and have 100k+ to blow then try out SVA.
But this is just my opinion.
(On the other hand SVA has some of the BEST figure drawing classes I’ve ever taken. I miss them already!)
Dana, after reading this I have to say I very much agree with you on some major points. Half of the kids from my class I kept questioning “how did you even get excepted into this school?” I was very excited when I met someone there who actually drew well or animated well, which wasn’t very often. A lot of lazy unmotivated people. I didn’t even “get” animation until 3rd year.
The thing is that SVA is PRO-Indie animator. They want you to make your own films and own content on your own. The working professionals all come in and tell us the same stuff “You don’t have to move to California to work in animation!” Unless you’re Bill Plympton or John Dilworth, then…YES, you DO have to move to California and they SHOULD teach collaboration among artists.
I did learn valuable skills from SVA, made some great friends and fell in love with NYC but I do think I could have learned a lot more.
Something to consider, for the young artists who want to go to college!
Join Rick and Morty as they boldly go where no sane person would even consider. Mondays at 10:30p on Adult Swim.
The Rick and Morty pilot is up with only one week until it’s premiere! Watch it while you can!
Variant of the Misfits Resurrection pic.
Just some color and wardrobe change mostly to capture the look of the Famous Monsters era of the band. Though Doyle always looks the same
Watch Rick and Morty - Launch Trailer. Coming soon, to a dimension near you. And all other dimensions, everywhere.
WHOOO!! Some of my character designs are in this trailer! This show is seriously gonna kick ass. You guys better watch out!
Well classic horror is definitely one of them. John K. was a prime influence on my art when I was very young and pointed me in the right direction. Jamie Hewlett changed my art forever. Was never the same after seeing his work on Gorillaz. His stuff opened my eyes to what design could be. I also love finding cool artists online. I kind of grab different things from cool stuff I dig and try to put it together to my liking.
Thanks! It took me about 24 years.
CTN was one of the best experiences I ever had! I sold out of all my books, met a lot of very talented people and very nice admirers of my work! Being my first time on the other end of the table I had no idea what to expect, but the response was better than I could have ever imagined! Thanks to everyone who stopped by! I will definitely be there next year!
Also be on the look out for my books, prints, stickers and buttons coming to my new online store! More updates soon!
